Mother’s Day Interview: Robyn Carter

We’re celebrating Mother’s Day at Ovia Health all month long! As part of our celebration, we want to highlight the work of a few moms who are committed to building great lives for their children while working on products and projects to support other moms.

Why do you love what you do?

What I love about what I do is knowing the transformative difference Room to Grow is making for children and families. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with an amazing team, a supportive board, and a thoughtful and generous community who all share in a mission that means so much to me – providing children with the best possible start in order to ensure a productive, positive future for each of them, which will ultimately strengthen our community.

What makes you feel proud to be a working mom?

First and foremost, the example I’m able to set for my own children, particularly my daughter. I want them to know that they can do whatever they set their mind to and that helping others should be an integral part of their lives. I love seeing how this directly translates in my daughter’s imaginary play. She puts on high heels, carries a pocketbook, and then sits at a desk to pick up an imaginary phone. I look forward to seeing the path each of my kids take.

Do you have any secret tips or tricks that make it easier to balance work and family?

I think my secret is that I don’t believe balance is really possible. I believe that you just need to do your best at everything, and forgive yourself every day for the things you missed. I am fortunate to have a wonderful partner, my husband, in this journey, which makes whatever balance is possible a reality.

Anyone special you’d like to recognize in honor of Mother’s Day?

I’d like to honor all the mothers who are vastly under-resourced, especially single moms. How much they do and the love they have for their children is amazing and inspiring. In addition, I’d like to honor my own mom. She was raised in poverty herself and did not complete her college degree until I was an adult. Through my entire childhood, my mother was naturally attuned to what attention, nurturing, and activities my brother and I needed to set us on the right path. I am one of the lucky ones and I owe that to my mom.
