A New Mom and a New Business

Jenny is a senior copywriter turned first-time mom. She used the Ovia Pregnancy app to monitor her pregnancy. When her adorable son, Harley was born, she started her own business.

When I was pregnant, I dreamed I’d be spending my days strolling through parks and meeting up with friends for coffee with my new bundle of joy. Holding a senior position in a fast-paced digital department for a large company meant I was used to having lots to do. I was looking forward to my maternity leave for some much needed calm with the baby. However, I ended up starting it earlier than planned. I struggled adjusting to this change and missed being at work. But once the baby arrived, I was sure my time would be taken up by a tiny person entirely dependent on me.

Adjusting to motherhood can be tough

Our son Harley was born at the end of June 2016. I was lucky enough to have my husband at home for the first month, but those four weeks just flew by. All of a sudden I was at home alone with Harley while I was still recovering. Thankfully, Harley’s always been a chilled out little guy. We still struggled through those night feeds like all us new parents do, but I found myself with too much time on my hands. Between nappy changes and feedings, I was searching for something else to keep busy. So while Harley napped, I started sewing clothes for him.

The Monochrome Mum was born

After posting a few photos on Instagram of Harley’s clothes, I started getting messages from people asking if I could make things for them too! One evening, I took the plunge by opening a shop on Etsy and setting up an Instagram account for the business. The Monochrome Mum was born! Things just took off from there. Over Christmas, I started investigating more things I wanted to make, and in January 2017, I launched a new designs of t-shirts.

I’ve now started to expand into nursery decorations, and I have lots more planned too! Now that Harley’s more active, it’s not as easy to get things done. I don’t want to sacrifice my time with him, but I’m so excited to expand and grow my business too. During the day we have quality time together, but once my husband comes home from work, the sewing machine comes out!

Parenting can be really challenging

There’s a lot of pressure to be the perfect parent. I’ve found it can be very competitive at times, and you can question whether you’re parenting right! Harley made me realize all that matters is that he’s happy and healthy. And part of that comes with having happy and relaxed parents. I initially felt like I’d lost my identity when I became a mother, but having him just gave me the push to still do things I enjoy and want to do. Setting up my new business has been challenging, and some days are harder work than others. But we’ve now got a good balance which works for us, and I can’t wait to see where things go from here!

You can find all my monochrome clothing and nursery decor through my Etsy shop. I’m based in the UK, but I’m happy to ship worldwide and love seeing your tiny ones wearing what I’ve made! As a little thank you for reading my guest blog post, use OVIA10 at the checkout to get 10% off your order.
